Apostille Convention

1. What is the Apostille Convention?

The Apostille Convention is an international treaty that provides for the simplified certification or legalization of public documents between signatory states.

- “Convention Abolishing the Requirements of Legalization for Foreign Public Document”

- List of Contracting States: United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Russia, and 92 other states.

- Effective July 14, 2007 in South Korea

2. What is an Apostille Certification?

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issue the document according to the Apostille Convention on official (including notarized) documents to be used in overseas.

3. The effects of the Apostille Convention

In order for foreign legal documents to be certified, the document must be certified by the foreign ministry of the country in which the document originated, and then by the foreign ministry of the government of the state in which the document will be used. However, by joining the Apostille Convention, time-consuming and costly process is minimized.

4. Apostille Service in Korea

Korean documents can be apostilled by visiting consular office at the fourth floor ofthe Korean Re Building located at Jongno-gu or by mailing to the same location.
